Olumo Rock is located in the city of Abeokuta which means "Under the rock" in Ogun state. The rock is believed to be a deity, the name is the combination of two words "Olu" which means deity and "Mo" which means moulded.

Olumo Rock serves as a natural place of refuge during the inter-tribal war in the 19th century for the Egbas.

The people of Ikija that is the community housing the ancient Olumo rock believed it was God who moulded the rock to save them at the time they needed it the most because of this there is an annual sacrifice performed to the gods so that none of the climbers of Olumo rock will be involved in a casualty and also to remember the important role the rock played in the lives of the older Egbas.


Olumo Rock is one of the most popular mountains in Nigeria, it has a height of 137 metres above sea level. Scattered rocks can be seen all over the city of Abeokuta before getting to the particular rock called Olumo rock.

People from different parts of the world comes there to pay a visit and see or hear tales about the Olumo Rock, now the rock had been renovated set for tourist to visit and feel the beautiful nature of the Olumo rock.
